Biography

The idea: Discopunk is performance. When you have a record and your crowd loves the sound in a break you can do quite a lot of DJ tricks to keep the sound longer than the actual record has put it. As a live PA its more freedeom, when the crowd loves a sound or pattern , I can just work it out, twist it and do mad sound stunts, just live and real time. As a liveact I have different sets of my own loops and sounds, so i can work it properly live. If you know stuff from my records it sounds a bit different and some of my stuff gets only played live. Of course I could play it exactly like its on the records, but then there would be no chance for performance, plus, you already know this version, so why not check me out doing a live remix ?

The name: Discopunk is fun and its attitude. Its about having a good saturday nite - still its art. Its about dressing in weired ways and living out crazy ideas, which in everyday life might be strange. Its about questioning things, reflecting history, concepts and attitudes. Its about creating a special moment with and through music. Its funky, its minimal and its free - just like my musical roots - disco and punk were.

The history: I was DJing as DJ Aroma for 5 years already when I started to play live. In the beginning I hadnīt even planed a live PA, it was more about producing, but I thought if I am producing stuff I want to have it on a stage. But before I had to learn and learn and learn..

The dream of a perfect sound: When I started DJing I always had the dream to produce my own records, because I thought it was very hard to find the perfect record. So I figured if I want my own perfect record I have to produce it.

Co - productions:
I met a couple of producers in the beginning and started off, just like a lot of people do: I sat next to a producer who turned and twisted the knobs and tried to explain what sort of sound I wanted. But still - it was never my own record. I felt the need to do it on my own and twist and twiggle those magic faders.

Starting it: I bought an atari computer, borrowed some drum machines (909;808) and started to learn and learn and learn. The first thing I learned was that it was simple to create a good groove but it was hard to create tracks and songs. So I asked everybody I knew to teach me their knowledge on sounddesign, producing and mastering. I still thank all of them for their patience.

Performance: When I felt secure enough to enter a stage with all the gear I started performing as a live PA. I knew it was going to be hard and I knew about a lot of problems that I would have to face on a stage ( there is so many things which CAN go wrong and some actually do..), but its pretty much the same like Djing, its only fifty percent how much you can handle your technique, the other fifty percent is to rock the crowd. After getting quite some experience on stage as a live PA within the last 5years I found my personal setup, which sounds well and which is good to handle. Today I love performing live as much and as DJjing .

The search for...: Now that I have the feeling that I know what I am doing pretty well I am working on my personal sound and way of playing. Today I come back to the point to start co working with other musicians and prdoucers again. The discopunk album will be featuring quite a number of guitars, singers and other musicians. It will be published in the early winter.

Label: Its cool to keep control over your own artwork and I am sick of discussions about the necessity if snearrolls or whatever labelpeople think that that they want to sell. Its like asking your favourite chef for salt , when all the aroma is already in a spicey meal. The album shows what I personally think is apropriate and good and I love my music , so I won`t discuss.
